Do I need a library card to take computer class?
No, just sign-up for the class at the library and pay any associated fees for the class you wish to take. However, should a class fill up, priority will be given to patrons of the library over individuals without a library card.
How much do the classes cost?
We charge by the course, the fee is $5.00 per course session. Thus, a three-part course like Microsoft Excel 2007 costs $15.00. The fee for each course will be clearly posted the course page on our website.
How do I enroll in a computer class?
You are not considered enrolled for class until your payment is received. You can sign-up and pay for class at the circulation desk at the library. We will also accept payment via US Mail. You must be enrolled at least 2 hours before the start of class.
Do courses have prerequisites?
We do not have formal prerequisites for our courses. On our website, each course will clearly list the skills you are expected to have prior to being part of our class.
What is the class size?
Our facilities work best when we have three to nine students. If a course has less than three students signed up, the class may be cancelled at the library's discretion. Once 10 students sign up for a course, any additional students will be placed on a waiting list in the case that someone cancels, and for priority placement in the next class.
Do your classes start at the very beginning, like how to turn the computer on?
We do not teach you how to set-up a computer and turn it on. We start by teaching you a little bit about the various components of a computer, and then how to use a mouse.
What if I can’t make all the classes in a series?
We ask that you not enroll if you know in advance that you will miss classes. Each class in a course builds upon what was taught in the previous course, so we prefer to enroll only those who are able to make a commitment to clear their schedule and attend all classes.
Can I practice in between classes?
Yes, we encourage it. The library has eight computers available for public use during library hours. You can come in and practice during those times. While our course instructor is not always here and available to answer your questions, we have tried to develop the lesson plan and guides to be self-study friendly.
Can I bring someone to class to help me?
In our experience this does not work well. It can be distracting to other students and to the teacher. In addition, often individuals working on the same computer miss critical points while conferring, requiring information to be repeated and slowing down the rest of the class. It is however, acceptable for both of you to take the course individually and sit at neighboring workstations.
Can I take the class on my own time?
Yes, we post all class materials on the class webpage. We develop our course materials to be self-study friendly. Although topics are covered more in-depth in class, there is no fee to download the course materials and work through them on your own.
Can I take a class more than once?
It is our hope that taking each course and keeping the class handouts will give you the basic understanding you need to be productive. However, if you wish to repeat a class, you are allowed to do so, providing you-enroll and pay for the class.
